The bible: a historical and literary introduction: chapter 1 notes. Want the bible to teach them how to live/what to believe. Even if you are not religious, you must have a firm grasp on the heart of jewish&christian religions. Most important reason for studying bible is its importance in western civilization history. Dominant religion in new world and europe is christianity which grew out of judaism. Christianity has had biggest impact ever on world (economically, culturally, etc) If we don"t understand bible we cannot understand the effects it had on the world. Bible is best selling book of all time. In 2005, 25 mill copies of bible were sold in u. s: most of these sold were sold to people who already had bibles. Half the u. s. pop reads the bible every month. 80% american believe the bible is the word of god. But has also been used for malicious purposes: ex: justify slavery and white supremacy.
