Haussmann is known to his contribution to improving the aesthetics of paris. It was important for him to know that artistic endeavours were secondary, his main were more instrumental, and to create modern spaces and infrastructures for better transportation and lifestyle. Haussmann developed a systematic technical approach to what he perceived as a series of urban problems. For the first time, planning was dealing with an existing urban organism seen as an whole, as a system made of a hierarchy of sub-systems such as: And even a system for the residential architecture. Haussmann endeavor was to adapt paris to the new reality created by the industrial revolution: from a morphological (urban form), technical, and functional perspective, to transform paris from a medieval city to an industrial city. To achieve his goals, haussmann creates a large municipal service composed of architects and civil engineers.
