Ppl become deviant as others define them that way. Both norms and the way ppl define rule breaking involve social power. The violation of a societies formally enacted criminal law. Attempts by society to regulate ppl"s thought and behaviour. Social control that is carried out by ordinary ppl. The painful sense that others disapprove of our actions. Widely observed and have a great moral significance (taboos) i. e. no sexual relationships w/ children. Norms for routine and causal interaction i. e. appropriate greeting and proper dress. Formal response by police, courts and prison officials to alleged violations of the law. Crime is always deviance but not all deviance is crime.
