Unexpected events and common experiences could turn a non- group into a group i. e. power outage. Groups influence the behaviour of their members by promoting conformity. Shows willingness to compromise our own judgement to avoid being different. In the experiment a group was asked to match the line on card 1 to one on card 2. Study showed that if 1/4 of the group said the wrong answer many ppl would then choose that even though it is clearly wrong. Original experiment was inspire by the atrocities of wwii and the shoah i. e. holocaust. 65% proceeded to the highest level (milgram 1963) Compared ppl"s compulsion to obey authority figures vs. conformity to group lead.
