Surtsey iceland took about a year to see large amount of vascular plants appear: secondary succession: following disturbance that does not destroy soil (i. e. after forest fire, land abandonment, flooding, ex. Rocky intertidal leveled off around 1 year, scrapped off boulders and attached them somehow. Succession in intertidal boulder fields: new colonization after disturbance. First colonizers green algae and barnacles, then red algae: much faster leveling of quicker than forests in 1-1. 5 years, ex. Soil building in glacier bay: depth increased over time, organic matter and amount of litter increased over time, moisture increase, phosphorus levels decrease when you got to spruce community. Hawaiian islands: each island represents different chromosequence. Four phases: predictable changes in community biomass, reorganization (10-20 years, aggradation (100+ years, transition, steady state (not point pleasant) Similar reaching steady-state conditions have been found in stream ecosystems after flooding.
