Homage and adaptation of fritz lang"s metropolis (1926): jazz age sci-fi dystopia as social satire; cf. Charlie chaplin"s modern times (1931) = use of slapstick. Princess sapphire = medieval european princess; double identity, cross dressing; influences of disney, german fairy tales, takarazuka revue. Exotic locales, but often social commentaries on postwar japan, changes in gender roles. Style: childlike innocence (including exaggeration) simulate early american animation (movement), star system of characters. Complex emotions expressed through eyes, eyebrows, mouth, nose. Less dualistic, alternate realities (dreams, nightmares, fantasies), metamorphoses into dark/evil sides. Drug using artist in bizarre relationship with alcoholic muse. Ambiguous hero: mysterious doctor with dark side. Later stories: set in realistic historical times and places, Adorufu - first tezuka manga translated into english. Story of adolf kaufmann (german/japanese) and adolf kamil (jewish) set around wwii, in japan, germany and israel. Third adolf = hitler: secret documents that hitler is secretly jewish.
