How and why we remember: oskar wears white like his dad, letters written, grandfather sculpts grandmother but in reality he is sculpting anna, grandmother"s nightmares, oskar listens to messages. Why do they remember: does not want to let go of his father, doomed to relive trauma. Grandfather cannot speak due to repression: sculpting is like remolding the grandmother. Grandmother compulsively loves the grandfather: writes on a typewriter that does not write. Age of innocence in the united states prior to 9/11: did not think that terrorism could happen in the united states.
