ENVS 1200 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Bottom Trawling, Overfishing, Sustainable Development
Fisheries and Aquaculture
January 13th, 2015
*Chapter 14
Fish area very important source of both income and protein worldwide.
The bottom trawling does more damage than any other fishing technique. Other
organisms that the fisheries get caught in the large nets are discarded or may
drown. The bycatch may be huge and is the main threat to many whales and marine
turtles. It also creates sediment plume as well as damaging the seabed.
Fishing down the Food Chain –
Obstacles to the recovery of cod and other large predatory fish is the loss of their
own prey. Since the 1970s, the percentage that is overfished has increased
drastically.
Ecosystem-Based Management –
Integrated Management –
Marine Spatial Planning –
Sustainable development –
AQUACULTURE WITH FRANCOIS
Political Science, Biology and Economics all overlap within Aquaculture.
The top three species in Aquaculture (in terms of production by weight) are:
1. Salmon
2. Mussels
3. Oysters
British Columbia produces half of the biomass of Canada’s aquaculture every year.
(then Newfoundland and Labrador, PEI and New Brunswick.)
From Fishing to Farming:
• Human control/ Input substitution
o Reproduction (Artificial Selection), Food (Fish Feed/FCR), Growing
Environment (Temperature/Salinity/Oxygen/Water Quality), Health
(Predators/Disease/Crowding)
• Externalities
o Feed, Waste (Nitrogen/Feces/Hypoxia), Parasites (Ciona/MSX/Sea
Lice), Antibiotics, Escape
• System Design
• Local vs Global Impact
