GEOG 1030 Lecture 8: GLACIATION AND SOILS
Document Summary
Glaciers o o o o o o o o o o o o o o. 2 main types : alpine and ice sheets. Flow down valleys at a rate of maybe a few cm/day. Total volume of alpine glaciers = total volume of water in all the world"s lakes. Only 2 exist today - antarctic and greenland. Flow outward in all directions from one or more centers of accumulation. Zone of accumulation - the white clean looking snow. Zone of wastage - glacier ice wasted during melting season. Snow line - it is where the zone of accumulation is next to the zone where the snow is melting. Rigid movement - top 50m rides passively along. Basal slip - flows on top of water accumulated under glacier. 10s m/day for short periods of time (hours-months) Move down and out due to their own weight. Only occur in the top ridge 50m not capable.
