Document Summary
Hooks offers an account and critique of the second wave and a bridge into the third wave. Experiences within the medical system is one example of institutionalized" sexism". Inaction when a woman comes forward with an issue. A lot of these processes are not formalized, but embedded. i. e. hiring a man over a woman vs. women are not allowed into medical school (past) She also notes that gender oppression is not the only form of oppression. The reformist movement is geared toward privileged white women as opposed to others. Hooks believes feminism benefits everybody- a world without domination is better for everyone. Conflict between revolutionary and reformist feminists, corresponded to class-lines. Different relationship to domestic sphere and paid labour. Reformist white women with class privilege wanted power and freedom they perceived the men of their class to possess. Privileged class came to define the agenda (access to media, etc. )
