Two main problems with cea: cannot compare alternatives with different outcomes. Ignores quality of life (qol) measures five years in poor health and 5 in good health similarly. Focus of cost-utility analysis on the quality of the health outcome that is being attained. Other measures that combine length and quality of life: disability adjusted life years (dalys, healthy-year equivalents (hyes) If you use a natural unit, use only years gained or disease adverted. Qol is a very broad concept; you can name it housing, health, finance, etc: all can contribute to your quality of life. Health-related qol is narrower concept that covers aspects of life influenced by physical, mental and social well-being. When to use cua: when a program has a wide range of outcomes and we wish to have a common unit of output for comparison. Qaly a year of life adjusted for its quality or its value.
