HIST 1502 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Mary Wollstonecraft
Document Summary
During the eighteenth century in western europe , single women had little protection under the law, and married women lost their legal identity. Women couldn"t retain a lawyer, sign a contract, inherit property, vote, or have rights over their children. Both women and men are human beings endowed with rights to life, liberty, pursuit of freedom and lots more. I wanted to know why women where oppressed and denied their rights and potential in the society and households as a whole. After researching the history of women"s rights, it became clear that their lives have drastically changed from having almost no freedom, to having a lasting impact on society today. Overtime many nations have progressed into realizing that patriarchal societies suppress women"s inherent right to have equal advantages and freedoms as men. In some places in the world, laws, customs, and social behaviour support the rights of women whereas in others they are ignored and inhibited.
