January 9  2014 ­ 150 years ago (1861, January) ▯ 4 southern states said they are separating from the  country ▯ results in civil war ­ Would last four years ­ Aftermath of civil war was pivotal to development of USA ­ Slave owners had incredible amounts of power ­ 1860 Lincoln elected as president ­ Southern presidents dominate previous presidencies up to civil war ­ Lincoln moderate anti­slavery ▯ participated in debates against slavery o Elected on foundation of “containing slavery” to areas presently ­ Stated that he was not going to mess with slave owners o Promised not to interfere ▯ olive branch to 7 states who had emancipated  themselves Election of 1860 ­ North ▯ Lincoln dominated votes because no other functioning parties  ­ South ▯ 2 different guys competing for southern votes o This is important because you could win presidency without southern  votes First Succession ­ Texas, Lousiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Southern Carolina o Distrust republicans, goal is to EXPAND and PROTECT slavery ­ Alexander Stephens, vice­president of the confederacy ▯ racist but rational to slave   owners ­ Through production of cotton ▯ expansion of slavery ­ 1860, cotton is number 1 export of ALL of USA ­ Principal raw material for Britain ­ South pivotal in world economy due to cotton ­ By 1860’s slaves worth $3 billion, equivalent to all land and buildings in  American south ­ Most present in DEEP South ▯ correlates where cotton is primarily grown ­ Almost 90% of African Americans enslaved before civil war th ­ December 1865 13  amendment outlaws slavery unless it is a punishment ▯ occurs   because of war ­ Virginia’s declaration to join confederacy changed the game ­ Almost 1 000 000 casualties ▯ largest American conflict (700 000 dead) ­ War enabled the states to destroy many institutions ­ 180 000 african men serving in the army during war ­ War was very costly for the north ▯ Republicans begin to need a higher reason for  war ▯ not just to unite the union o Diplomatic purposes ▯ keep Britain neutral (?) ▯ declare moral purpose to  keep Britain on the sidelines ­ Battle of Antigua ▯ Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, September 1862 o Says that slaves are free ▯ however left up to slaves to seek out areas  controlled by union st ­ Emancipation Proclamation January 1  1863, frees slaves where Lincoln  doesn’t have power ­ Military power, slave resistance, internal collapse of the confederacy, change in  motives/beliefs of the war ▯ Spring 1865 ends
