March 20  2014 ­ JFK and Birmingham church bombings shock nation/cause doubt in movment ­ Lyndon B. Johnson takes over for JFK o Turns out to be most aggressive supporter of civil rights o Makes legislation Kennedy had proposed a priority o Southern power in senate usually stop these types of bills from passing ▯ Johnson out manoeuvers southern power in senate  ­ 1964 Johnson signs Civil Rights Act o Outlaws racial discrimination and segregation in schools, public places,  and employment o Gives federal government power to enforce this by withdrawing money  from businesses and institutions that violate the act o Doesn’t inherently meant segregation would immediately end th  Similar to 14  amendment  Doesn’t specify what’s going to happen in terms of political  power/development  ­ Southern democrats clearly trying to encourage segregation in senate o 7 of 94 southern democrats support ­ 2 things of doubt o Will integration be carried out on the ground o Whether or not African Americans will be able to gain political power,  especially in the south  ­ Immediately after the signing, MLK and other member check in to a previously  segregated hotel no problem o However some hotels shut down rather than become integration ­ Lester Maddox tries to get blacks to leave at gunpoint ▯ closes restau
