Document Summary

Previous lecture described innate immunity , which protects your body at the beginning. Your skin is the first barrier to pathogens . of an infection. Layers of endothelial cells are so tight that a pathogen can"t get in. Skin secretes substances, which kill some pathogens. Immune response to a cut of the skin: Two complement proteins , specifically, c3a + c3b , bind to the bacteria. These complement proteins are produced via: (1) classical pathway (via antibody) (2) alternative pathway (via cleaving of complements) (3) lectin-mediated pathway (via mannose lectin binding protein) Mast cells (responsible for allergic responses, lots of granules) Promotes inflammation and recruitment of other leukocytes (i. e. neutrophils) Leukocytes release vasoactive mediators ( promotes v. p and v. d ) V. p loosens junctions between endothelial cells. Involved in the extravasation of neutrophils and their recruitment to the site of an infection (via il-8).
