MICI 3119 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Mycolic Acid, Arabinogalactan, Flagellum
Document Summary
Bacterial physiology the study of structures & functions of bacterial cells and their components. Lecture 1: intro: surface appendages capsule, flagella, pili, cell envelope outer membrane, cell wall (peptidoglycan, cytoplasm dna, rna, ribosomes, etc, extracellular toxins, enzymes, acids, etc. Flagella (flagellum: h-antigen, long, threadlike proteinaceous structures, 3 parts: basal body, hook, filament, responsible for motility (driven by proton motive force, 4 arrangements: monotrichous, lophotrichous, amphitrichous, peritrichous. Peptidoglycan: consists of repeating units of n-acetylglucosamine (nag) and n-acetylmuramic acid (nam) forming the glycan chains. 2: nag and nam are joined by b-1,4 glycosidic linkages in long. Lipopolysaccharides (lps: unique to gram (-) bacteria, found on outer leaflet of outer membrane. Major differences between the g+ and g- cell envelope: g+ has a thick peptidoglycan teichoic acid, lipoteichoic acid, g- has a thin peptidoglycan, outer membrane, lps, periplasm. Cytoplasm: dna, rna, ribosomes, proteins, ions, endospores harmless until they germinate, involve in diseases in humans such as tetanus.
