Language asymmetry: Commissurotomy
Midterm question about this
Cutting of the corpus callosum
Used for individuals with contractible epilepsy
Very invasive procedure
Research on people having this procedure done will help in determining in which hemisphere is
language dominant
In this experiment, images are shown only for a very brief amount of time, that way the image
only ends up in one hemisphere or the other
So in experiment with subject who has undergone commissurotomy
o If spoon presented in right hemisphere, subject says I see spoon
o But if presented in left hemisphere, they say I see nothing
However if asked to pick what they saw by feel only, they will pick the spoon
Compare utility of dichotic listening, fMRI and WADA in a clinical setting
Advantages
Disadvantages
o If you're too fat, have metal fragments in your body, can't have MRI, so WADA beneficial in
that sense
Dissociation of Function
On the behavioural level, dissociation of function denotes the finding that performance on one
task is impaired while performance on a second is not
Have a particular brain area removed, test
o Group a scores 100% on reading
o But only 20% on writing
Single dissociation
Group X receives right temporal lobe lesion is impaired in singing task, but not in the speaking task
o From this you can say lesion x is associated with an impairment on task A
Group y does not undergo lesion surgery is not impaired in either of the tasks
There is limited inference in this. Restricted to cognitive performance in one group only
Reciprocal (double) dissociation
Group A has lesion in one area, group B in completely different area
o Results show impairment in opposite function
So the functions are said to be separable in the brain, in other words, doubly dissociable
Can be used to localize a function to a particular hemisphere
Chapter 12 Variations in cerebral asymmetry: sex/gender differences
Meta analysis
o A method for synthesizing information

Document Summary

Research on people having this procedure done will help in determining in which hemisphere is language dominant. In this experiment, images are shown only for a very brief amount of time, that way the image only ends up in one hemisphere or the other. So in experiment with subject who has undergone commissurotomy. If spoon presented in right hemisphere, subject says i see spoon: but if presented in left hemisphere, they say i see nothing. However if asked to pick what they saw by feel only, they will pick the spoon. Compare utility of dichotic listening, fmri and wada in a clinical setting. If you"re too fat, have metal fragments in your body, can"t have mri, so wada beneficial in that sense. On the behavioural level, dissociation of function denotes the finding that performance on one task is impaired while performance on a second is not.
