Description
March 26th, 2013 March-26-13 1:08 PM Neurogenesis in adults: hippocampus and olfactory bulbs  Granule cells within hippocampus lead to increase in number of neurons within the hippocampus  Know table 25.1 Neural transplantation research  Parkinson's disease o Rigidity, akinesia, tremor, posture/balance, slowness of movement o Have initiation problems in cognition, in motor problems can't get started Parkinson's disease  Loss of cells in the substantia nigra of the ventral midbrain o Loss of motor function through dopaminergic innervations of basal ganglia and forebrain  Often treated with L-dopa o Does reduce symptoms for many people o Becomes ineffective over time though o But have dyskinesias as side effects (movement abnormalities) Early outcome of neuro-transplantation" fetal stem cells for parkinson's disease  Aborted fetal stem cells are injected into the putamen  Many patients improved as a result of this  Problem was that almost 50% of the people who received this treatment had developed dyskinesias within two years of treatment Mendez  Injects stem cells into putamen and substantia nigra  The placebo effects are quite high in these studies (25%) Are interventionists making a difference in recovery  Occupational therapy is very important and enhances recovery to a great extent o OT services interventions reduced odds of poor outcome o And increased personal activity of daily living scores Individual rehabilitation after stroke  Restorative o Get function back to premorbid, healthier state  Compensatory o Learn coping skills to get around deficit o Works better than drills for attention, memory and other cognitive deficits Visual field defects due to striate cortex or optic radiation lesions  People with these visual field defects often reported problems in everyday life, slowed reading speed o Don't see things fast enough o Lower quadrant opsia worse than an upper quadrant opsia Spontaneous recovery of VFD  43% of Korean veterans showed some recovery from VFD  So it is possible for recovery to take place Zihl's method of aiding restoration of vision  Occulatmotor training  Train person with VFD to make larger and faster saccades into the VF defect than normal o So make them focus it into the VFD faster  Shift the eyes in a large sweep from fixation to beyond the target  Takes thousands of trials for it to be effective  But it does work, 80% showed decreased VFD size  Also brought about an increase in the speed of reading Enhancing recovery of hemiparetic arm  Restrain the good arm in stro
