PSYO 2470 Lecture 12: Sleep I
Document Summary
Biological rhythms refers to the actives done by the body daily, such as heart rate, breathing rate, sleep-wake cycles, etc . Some animals (like bears) have seasonal rhythms, such as. Eeg helps to measure generalized activity in the cortex. Some advantages of eeg is that is none-invasive and it can be used during sleep. To be more specific eeg actually measures electrical activity, not only from one neuron, but from thousands of neurons that fire together (synchrony). Also eeg calculates the difference between two neurons. If neurons are not coordinated the spikes would look random. Meg picks up (or reads) the magnetic field that is generated by the electrical current from the brain. It has better temporal resolution, and it has better spatial resolution. Meg has fewer limitations than eeg but eeg is more accecible. Eeg activities are similar across species allowing different animals to be a model.
