Document Summary
4 - lecture #1 - psychophysics, light and. Sensation - involves transduction of the physical world into neural impulses. Perception - involves binding these sensory impulses into a representation of thr world. Sensory impulses are processed by distinct brain regions (frontal lobe, temporal lobe, parietal lobe, occipital lope) Physical stimulus --> brain response --> perception (works in a cycle) The relationship between physical stimuli and the sensations/perceptions about them that we experience. Detection threshold (absolute threshold) - the quantitative amount of a stimulus required to be detected. Procedure: amounts of a stimulus are presented on different trials and the participant reports if a stimulus was detected. The absolute threshold is the stimulus that is detected 50% of the time. This image shows how the brain has distinct regions for different sensory functions. The amount of a stimulus judged to be different from a standard stimulus. 50% of the time = "just noticeable difference"
