Developmental psychologists study age related changes in thoughts and behaviors across the life span in 3 domains physical, cognitive and social-emotional. U-shaped function initially present, goes away then comes back again. Developmental research designs: longitudinal same people studied over time at different stages. History effects not sure whether changes in intellectual ability for example are due to aging or unique to this particular cohort: cross-sectional change through different ages at the same point in time. Cohort effect grew up in different historical conditions so unable to tell if differences are due to age or different social/political conditions experienced: longitudinal-sequential design combining cross-sectional & longitudinal to make cohort comparisons. 2 weeks and begins with fertilization (conception) 30-50% of pregnancies end at this stage. Not yet attached to mother: embryonic stage: Formation of major organs: fetal stage: Once nervous system begins to form, movement begins. Neural migration movement of neurons from one part of the fetal brain to more permanent place.
