Both differ from animal communication in expressing beyond the here and now . Cooing includes only vowels (first 6 months) One-word utterances 12 months (like pre language) Universal to language-specific listening through loss of phonemes. After 10 months, kids stop being able to make distinction between two similar sounds. Early on, they perceive all sound contrasts. By 1 year, they perceive only the phonemes that are in their native language. Manual babbling in 6 to 12 months: slower rhythm & restricted to front of body.
