In this book he described the following: emotions are a product of evolution (or natural selection), emotional responses accompany emotional states. *he came up with all these theories by interspecies comparisons. (some behaviors that all animals display are not far different on how humans display them). 3 main ideas: expressions of emotion evolve from behavior that signals animal"s intention, if signals benefit animal displaying them, communicative functions will evolve, opposite messages often signaled by opposite movements. *he came up with the idea of antithesis (differences of emotional displays of different emotions)
