Association areas: processing between sensory and motor systems. *we recruit more areas of association cortex on the left side of the brain. Human vocal tract: vocal cords are responsible for controlling voice vibrations, vocal cords also help us pronounce phonemes (fundamental sounds of any language). *language in animals is limited to mostly body movements. *there is some evidence that animals may comprehend or acquire comprehension of human language. Kids can recognize more phonemes than adults but this ability is later lost according to their language. Motherese/parentese: a particular way to speak to children. this is critical to learn language due to constant repetition of words and the slowing down of the speech. Statistics leaning of combinations of sounds: brain mechanisms that allow kids by using probability to figure out what certain sound means. *we start learning about the sounds of language before we are even born.
