Tuesday, january 19, 2016 total institution: an institution which includes creating barriers between you and the civil institutions (outside) These institutions dismantle ones self by fundamental separating them from civiv society. Those who are in them did not necessarily do so voluntarily. There tends to be some sort of hierarchy or staff/inmate situation. In these institutions, there is formation of a world apart from the home world , otherwise known as civil society. All of the aspects that take part in our life (work, play, sleep) are con ned into one social situation. These institutions can be institutional or they can be an aiding area. Sees these institutions as violence and assault on human dignity. These tools such as our belongings, our clothing etc are generally taken away by total institutions. He questions whether there is a self left without these tools. Hoffman believes that these institutions can create outcomes but are still fundamentally effective but never neutral.
