Sosa 2503 lecture 3 january 15, 2019. Society"s complex system must have the subsystems coordinating with one another to make society function. He was interested in sickness and how dysfunction affect the system (in the sense that it breaks the system down). Parsons saw all of us performing social role and those roles always have a function in a given society. How they adapt is by creating a special social role for the ill: the sick role. Parsons saw the ill as could be deviant if not for the sick role. The medical profession play a major role in this according to parson. He identified that medicine play a role in the functioning of the sick role by legitimatizing the sick. Materialism: origins with work of k. marx, society is the result of its economic system (ex. feudalism, capitalism, communism, etc), which determines who owns the mean/mode of production.
