ECO 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Aphasia, Partial Seizure, Melanoma
Document Summary
Week 12 diseases of the cns: demonstrate the knowledge of gross and microscopic anatomy necessary to understand disease processes affecting the nervous system. Review the structures of the central nervous system - cerebral hemispheres (and deep structures - thalamus, basal ganglia), cerebellar hemispheres and the brainstem and spinal cord. Covering of the brain - meninges - three layers - dura (outermost), arachnoid and pia (in contact with the surface of the brain). Cerebrospinal fluid (csf) produced in the lateral ventricle by the choroid plexus flows to the midline third and then fourth ventricles. Csf exits the fourth ventricle by small openings (foramina) to enter the subarachnoid space which covers the entire cns (subarachnoid space lies between the arachnoid and pia). Csf in the subarachnoid space is reabsorbed into the blood stream -any obstruction to the circulation of csf results in hydrocephalus (increased size of the ventricles).
