Skin (1) protects body from environmental damage (eg. harmful substances, radiation) and (2) acts as a barrier to infectious organisms. Other functions: thermoregulation, synthesis of vitamin d. Skin accounts for approximately 16% of an individual"s body weight (includes hair, nails, glands sebaceous and sweat) Comprised of three layers with distinct and separate functions: epidermis (outermost skin layer, vitamin d synthesis. Contains capillaries, smaller blood vessels, and nerve endings. Connects directly to the epidermis to facilitate the exchange of oxygen, nutrients and waste products: reticular: deeper than the papillary; composed of collagen and elastin. Functions: (1) protects various body areas from debris and invasion, (2) provides insulation, (3) enables the conduit of sensory stimulation to the nervous system, and (4) contributes to gender identification. Vellus hair: fine, short, hypopigmented, and located all over the body. Terminal hair: darker and coarser than vellus; varies in length and is generally found on the scalp, brows, and eyelids: composed of keratin!!!!!!!!!!!!!
