E. g. what"s causing all the bullying: hypothesis or prediction. I think that people are bullying a lot because they have no empathy: devising a method and gathering data. E. g. get people from different schools and assign them to groups. Separate for empathy training, other gets history of school teaching: drawing conclusions. E. g. people who were trained with empathy didn"t bully so much. Internal: no confounding variables, only independent variable is affected. External: generalizing study to other people and situations. Different ways to measure behavior: self-report methodologies. Standardized results: everyone gets the same questions and everyone answers the same. Social desirability: answering the questions to satisfy the desire of the interviewee. Can"t be used with people with learning disabilities. Can"t be used with very young children who can"t read or understand language very well. What people say is not often what they do: clinical interviews. More flexible, can get a rich meaning of answers. Not standardized so harder to compare subjects.
