*Covey (1989). Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.
“Seek first to understand, then to be understood” (Covey, 1989: 235).
Some reasons why leaders often fail to listen:
Lack of time
Distraction & failure to concentrate
Conditioning (traditional version of leadership)
Leadership style (e.g. authoritarian)
Judgements made too quickly
Unease and lack of skill dealing with emotional content
Lack of training on listening skills, just don’t know
Lack of self-reflexivity
What do you think?
What are some key reasons on some occasions you have not listened as well as you
should have?
As a leader need to consider human need and environmental conditions!
Ex. 9.4 Ten Keys to Effective Listening
Ex. 9.4 (contd.)

3. Empathetic listening
*Provide one example

Half of our attention to the verbal and nonverbal communication of the speaker
Half of our attention to background content (such as?)
What do you think happens in such cases?
Test states: “Without our conscious effort, much that we should be listening to will
be missed” (p. 40)
But what else?
