Aesthetic: modify the appearance and/or hand or drape of fabrics. Mechanical finishes: dry finishing; physical treatment to a fabric surface to cause a change in fabric. Four classifications: permanent: chemical change in fiber structure, durable: effectiveness is reduced with cleaning but will last through life of garment, semi durable: last through several washings, temporary: removed or substantially diminished with first washing. Process of finishing: pre-treatment: cleaning (get rid of soil and additives), boil-off (cottons), scouring (woolen and worsted) , desensitizing (removes warp starches with an enzyme solution) Calendaring: pressing or ironing at high temperature and high pressure. Napping & sueding: napping- flannel, insulation, wear and pilling, sueding. Pliss - a finish and fabric name; puckering like seersucker. Shearing making it a softer finish produce hand and drapability: softening- cotton batiste, nylon taffeta, poly/cotton broadcloth; to. Antimicrobial finishes- to stop growth of bacteria. Durable press- not a specific textile finish, only last after a few washings.
