Empathy: recognizing and accepting the other person feelings/actions without criticism. Ethnocentrism: look at the world primarily from the perspective of one"s own culture. Facilitation (general leads): a response to encourage patient to say more, continue with the story. Done by showing interest (eye contact, shifting forward). Leading question: implies one answer is better than another. Reflection: response that echoes patients words by repeating a part of what the persona just said, focuses further attention on specific phrase, they can continue in their own way. Summary: final review of what you understand the person said, condenses the facts and presents how you perceive the situation, the person can then agree or make corrections. Should include positive health aspects, identified health problems, plans for action. The communication process (understanding one another, convey meaning, using reflectivity) Sending: verbal communication words, vocalizations, tone, non-verbal communication body language (posture, gestures, eye contact, etc). Since it is less conscious it is more reflective of true feelings.
