Postnatal development: body growth and change: rapid growth during 1st two years, then slows down, body proportion changes as well. Patterns of growth: cephalolcaudal pattern: growth occurs first at the top - the head and gradually proceeds from top to bottom, proximodistal pattern: growth starts at the center of the body and moves toward the extremities. Puberty: all physical changes associated with sexual maturity; takes about 4 yrs, no single marker: physical evidence of puberty. Primary sex characteristics: primary sex organs increase in size, onset of fertility, menarche: first period, spermarche: first ejaculation with sperm. Secondary sex characteristics: features that distinguish the two sexes, but that are not directly part of the reproductive system. Changes in body composition: boys increase in muscle, girls increase in body fat, body image. Major source of adolescent self-esteem: especially for girls, who become less satisfied over time, boys get more satisfied, timing. Environmental factors: activity-level, health and nutrition.
