Atapuerca and Sima del Elefante  Atapuerca sites:  Gran Dolina - 1990s started the excavations - In 1993, there was a test excavation  A shaft was dug into the opening of the dolina  Gained pretty good understanding of how many layers and how thick the layers were in the dolina, and where the hominins were - 2002: formal excavations - The major stratification sequence:  11 different layers  Gran Dolina Layer 6 (2m x 2m area): o Recovered over 100 bones, mostly fragmentary o These bones represent at least 6 different individuals o Portion of an individual’s skull found as well o Presumably all findings direct descendant of homo erectus o Radiometric (absolute) dates and paleomagnetism suggest these remains are 800- 875,000 years old o Stone tools from older layer, approx. 1 million years old o Definition of paleomagnetism
