Its not a guarantee but it increases their possibility of survival. Diff are significant enough to produce 2 diff species. Species spread into a variety of environment and , either through geographic barriers or just sheer distance, diff groups fail to continue to breed and so gradually diverge. Phyletic gradualism slow accumulation of differences. Only a small percentage of organisms that lived on the earth becomes fossils.
