Document Summary

Brief overview of the notion of the self in western thought. Account of key points from george herbert mead. Examination of the central ideas of erving goffman. Some people say there must be more to it than consciousness to who we are. The self is more merely than just the body (soul?) You"re just not the mind/body but also how you behave in this world. Particular history no one has lived your life but you (makes you who you are) Adding time makes it different as well (you"re not the same person as you were yesterday) The self is comparing and contrasting with another. There has to be others in order for you to exist. Constantly looking at how others behave as a means to reflect back on us. We do what we think is appropriate, our self is shaped by others even if they"re not present. You"re born with a brain but not a mind.
