Reducing anxiety and accomodations Uncertainty reduction can be thought of as the process whereby individuals for, " anchors for other people, things, and ideas Anchors: stables interpretation of things that ground future interactions, experience and knowledge-- we need these in order to interest with others Anxiety: inability to safely conduct oneself in absence of certainty -- a product of a lack of an anchor ( stable information) Anxiety blocks social cohesion -- must be resolved if a stable bond is to form These bonds can be positive (as between friends), negative (as with a nemesis), or neutral ( as a formal interaction Depending on the circumstance, we tend to focus more or less on context High context: a great deal of contextual info needed Japanese Low context: rely on the explicit content of communications English Families high talking asking
