Once a choice of units from a paradigm has been made, some sort of combination must take place. A sentence is a syntagm of choices made from. An ensemble is a syntagm of choices made from. The paradigm of hats, ties, shirt, etc. A mean can be a syntagm of items on a menu. The literal meaning of the sign- what is represented. Connotation: the socio-cultural (and sometimes personal) associations the reader makes how it is represented. His theory; working class: biologically inferior to middle class and aristocracy. Towards working class: need to provide education. Speaks of interest for the elite; although he shows like he cares for the lower classes. Culturalism: reject idea that people are passive dupes (stupid), working class has always produced own culture but mass culture destroys it (madison avenue, hollywood, etc. ) Working class is being colonized by the cultural industries. Problem is coming from the top not the bottom.
