Roland Barthes 1915-1980 Developed the concept of chain or association (codes) A code is an amalgamation of hundreds of ideas and or elements into one conventional concept Messages are based on codes codes re cultural specific Denotation and connotation the distinction between Denotation and connotation is the guiding idea of Barthes semiotic theory. He claims that when we read signs and sign complexes, we can distinguish between different kinds of messages. Denotation is the literal or obvious meaning or the first order signifying system connotation refers to the "second order signifying system " additional cultural meanings we can also find from image or text Barthes identifies connotations with the operation of ideology
