Document Summary

It invoked both the spatial characteristics of the frame and temporal or time dependent character of the film medium, narrative fiction films tell stories, documentaries reand observe events. The shot: the shot single uninterrupted series of frames, is film"s basic unit of expression: an image whose meaning unfolds over time. Shots vary in length, theoretically, from the briefest exposure of single film frame to the uninterrupted exposure of a full roll of motion picture film. In hitchcock "s rope(1948), the exposure of a roll or film without cuts yielded shots of about eight minutes in length. Editing several shots together produces a scene, which is a coherent narrative unit: one that has its own beginning middle end. Long take: a shot that lasts longer than the conventional. Long takes build dramatic tension, emphasize the continuity of time and space and allow directors to focus on the movement of actors in the space of the mise-en- scene.
