J.C. Oates “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” Plot Connie is a teenage girl who appears to be a narcissist because of her habit of glancing into mirrors often and checking other peoples’ faces to make sure her own was all right. She seems self-absorbed because all she cares about is herself and no one else; even when her mother nags, Connie replies with a rude gesture by raising her eyebrows at her mother’s complaints. What’s appealing about Connie is that she knows how to carry herself well. Connie is immature and imperceptive when she wishes her mother to be dead when her mother continues to complain about her irritating actions. She is also in constant conflict with her family, making fun of her sister June and giving rude gestures to her mother. Irony of Arnold Friend’s name The irony in Arnold Friend’s name is that he says he’s not old, yet he is older than he claims he is.
