History of impacts (past, recent) History • List some of the major impact features preserved on the Earth’s surface and explain why impact craters appear to be rare on Earth  Suffered multiple impacts – craters eroded  Evidence from inner planets/moon  Gene Shoemaker: until recently, impact on earth believed to be improbable  Moon craters, extinct volcanoes, large circular structures associated with ejecta, quartz, iridium etc.  Late Triassic – 75km diameter North Quebec, at least 4 other impacts at same time  Reassemble continents to late Triassic times  Periodicity of mass extinctions:
