Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) Measure from 1-8 how explosive an eruption is  Based on how much volume of magma/rock is erupted and how how does the plume get into the atmosphere  Also takes account how often these eruptions occur  Big ones don’t happen often but can have significant impact on us St. Helens, 1980 VEI = 5 Explosive Eruptions: Calderas  Yellowstone, USA, ~2.2Ma, ~2,500km3  Toba, Indonesia, ~75ka, ~2000km3  Tambora, Indonesia, 1815, ~50km3 o 1816: “Year without summer” Eruption Columns  Small (<1 km) to large (>20km height) (Large circulating around the world)
