In 1610 london and bristol company sponsored a settlement at cupers cove(cupids) conception bay designed to serve as a base for the newfoundland fishery and trade in furs with the beothuk. By 1612 about 50 men and women in the colony cleared land planted gardens and built homes. The colony quick sunk it was harassed by pirates agriculture proved difficult and the. Beothuk were not eager to trade in furs. Settlement in ferryland was more enduring was est by sir george calver in 1620 it had substantial financial backing. French pioneers and an outbreak of scurvey made the winter of 1628-29 unbearable cauging calver to leave the coloney to his family agents(cuz he was interested anymore) Ferryland survived to become one of the major english settlements in newfoundland.
