Barrier Methods Male Condom  A contraceptive sheath that is placed over the penis  Condoms come in latex and polyurethane for those allergic to latex  Perfect user rate is 2% but typical-user failure rate is about 18%  Side effects: problem for those allergic to latex but other types are available  98% effective  Advantages: cheap, convenient, east to use, protects from STIs  Disadvantages: less spontaneity, may reduce sensation but this may be an advantage to males wishing to delay ejaculation Female Condom  Polyurethane sheath with two rings in it, one at either end  Prevents sperm from entering vagina and blocks entrance to uterus  Typical-user failure rate is 21% - perfect user failure rate is 5%  Advantage : o Less susceptible to tearing o Method a woman can use herself to reduce risk of an STI o Covers more of the vulv
