Conception  Sperm can last in women for up to 5 days  Ovulation often occurs on day 14  Egg can be fertilized for 48 hours  Day 9 – 16: optimal time for conception/to get pregnant Sperm meets egg  200 million sperm per ejaculation o Some sperm will flow out of vagina because of gravity o Some sperm will be killed by the acidity of the vagina, which they are sensitive to o Some sperm will swim up the wrong fallopian tube (containing no egg) o Only about 2000 reach the tube containing the egg  Zona pellucida surrounds the egg  Sperm secretes hyaluronidase enzyme which dissolves the zona pellucida, permitting one sperm to penetrate the egg  Zygote is a fertilized egg o Identical twin is from one zygote, then split into two embryo
