Sex in the News or Paper  Rarely evidence based  Anecdotal evidence suggests journalists obtain background information for sex stories from a quick internet search o Or rely on PR firms to advertise products  Scare tactics, sensationalized, agenda-setting Sex in advertisements… can it be used for good as well as for bad?  Good if its for sexual health  Some research has found that: o Youth who view more sexual content than average behave sexually 9-17 months older than their counterparts o Watching high levels of SEM during puberty doubled the likelihood of initiating intercourse and increased the probability of advances in non-coital activities in the year following o 50% of advertisements aimed at younger women are focused on the need to be physically attractive; research suggests it isn’t a coincidence this group is more likely to suffer from body
