Traditional medical approaches form only a small part of the overall treatment picture. -two million canadain meet the diagnostic criteria of the alcohol abuse and the substance dependence. 40 billion is being spend annually on alcohol and other drugs of abuse, there is a significant drain on the canadain economy towards health care. Study dependence as a brain disease had focused research effort on developing medications for treatment. Experts believe that pharmacotherapies will not cure a chronic, re5lapsing behavioural disorders like substance abuse. Pharmacotherapies can provide a window of opportunities for behavioural/physical treatments by relieving withdrawal symptoms.
