Document Summary

Explanation of how blood returns to the right atrium. During the systemic (body) circuit where the aorta pumps oxygenated blood to the body, it also pumps blood through the inferior vena cava to the superior, then back into the right atrium. The heart is about the size of your fist and is located sub-sternal, center thoracic, superior to the stomach with the apex on the left. wall of the left ventricle thicker than the wall of the right ventricle. The left ventricle needs the thicker walls because it pumps blood at a higher pressure. The blood must travel throughout the whole body. The right ventricle only needs to pump blood to the lungs, thus needing less pressure and support from the walls. Valves are important because they prevent blood from going backwards, making sure that blood is going in one direction.
