Political Parties in Canada Ideologies & Modern Canadian parties o Neither conservative nor liberal are strongly ideological o Substantive agreement on major econ issues  Competition is often along technocratic lines, trust/valence issues, or elites have reached (in census on contentious issue) o NDP a weak social democratic party in international terms – if NDP rise holds, may realign politics along a more ideological line Valence Politics o Based around party image s- heuristic devices/cues that guide voters intentions o Use opinions of leaders as short cut for political decision making o Voters smart enough to know that they don’t know o Example of valence issues: economic well-being, accessible healthcare, protection against terrorism, honest in government o Near universal consensus in favour, disagreement over how, not what Political Parties – Roles
